Honoring those who served
In memory of Colonel Joe Madison Jackson. Colonel Joe Madison Jackson (March 14, 1923 – January 12, 2019) was a United States Air Force officer and Medal of Honor recipient recognized for his extraordinary bravery during the Vietnam War. On May 12, 1968, he carried out a daring rescue of three Air Force personnel—Maj. John W. Gallagher, TSgt. Morton J. Freedman, and SSgt. James G. Lundie—who were stranded at a Special Forces camp overrun by enemy forces. Under intense enemy fire, Jackson expertly flew his C-123 cargo plane into the besieged area, successfully evacuating the men. To honor Colonel Joe Madison Jackson's legacy, Auburn, WA Airport commissioned a mural in his memory.
